Thanks to modern advances in dental materials and techniques, dentists and patients today have several choices when it comes to selecting materials to repair damaged, worn or decayed teeth.
The many new materials such as ceramics and polymer compounds that look more like natural teeth have not eliminated the usefulness of more traditional dental materials, such as metal alloys and dental amalgam.
Factors to consider when choosing what is right for you: where and how the filling is placed, the chewing load that the tooth will be subject to, a patient's oral and general health and the number of visits needed to prepare and adjust the restored tooth.

Tooth-Colored Restorations

Composite Fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium that produces a tooth-colored filling. They are sometimes referred to as composites or filled resins. Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid size restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Composites can also be "bonded" or adhesively helad in a cavity, often allowing the dentist to make a more conservative repair to the tooth.
Resin Onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.
Amalgam Fillings are still a good choice in some restorations for some patients. Discuss your options with Dr. Thompson.

Since the resin used in tooth-colored restorations contain fluoride this can help prevent decay. The resin wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for your gums!
